About
I am an artist living in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, working in watercolour, mixed media and oils. I want my paintings to transport the viewer to evocative, ethereal and strangely coloured landscapes that have a dream-like quality.
I paint from life with a vibrant and expressive use of colour, rich pigment, loose brush-marks and strong contrasts of light and shade to create a sense of light and space. My work often has an abstract undertone, investigating the interplay of colour, tone and form, in dreamlike fields of colour. I like the experimental and unpredictable nature of painting, such as wet-in-wet watercolour techniques or the tactile effects of layering thick bright paint with a palate knife.
I am not interested in imitating nature. Rather I want my paintings to transport people away from their every-day realities. To take them on a journey to unfamiliar places, sights and colours. Painting is deeply personal to me and I want my paintings to express my emotions and inner world. The process of painting is more important to me than the finished product. I find it therapeutic and meditative: a way of exploring and confronting my emotions as well as a form of escapism and release.
